Bleak legal landscape favors a few specialities

"Two years ago, if I had your résumé, I'd simply ask you where you'd like to work and I'd get you that job tomorrow — with a signing bonus," says Avis Caravello of Avis Caravello Attorney Search Consultants in San Francisco.

But making that move isn't as easy as it was a few years ago. Firms that were recruiting partners previously were willing to consider those who billed at least $1 million annually. Since the financial meltdown, lawyers have to bring as much as $2 million, Caravello says.

"It's not just about being a great practitioner anymore," she says. "It's about being a great practitioner and a great rainmaker."

"They're getting laid off in droves," Caravello says. "There's never been more outstanding corporate associate résumés on the market than there is now."
